Coronavirus continues to spread across the United States. The number of confirmed cases are growing day by day and impacting communities all over, including ours. For the most accurate, up to date information on the number of cases please visit the CDC.
We encourage you to not live in fear but to prepare your home or facility to reduce the spread. Before we get into how to protect and prepare ourselves against the virus, let’s talk about the basics first….
What is Coronavirus?

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), coronaviruses are common in many different species of animals including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERS, SARS, and now current outbreak 2019-nCoV. 2019-nCoV is a new respiratory virus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Providence, China. Many patients in the Wuhan outbreak were reportedly linked to a large seafood/animal market, suggesting animal-to-person spread. Spread from person-to-person happens among close contacts (about 6 feet) via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. (Similar to how the flu is spread.)
Symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. For confirmed cases of 2019-nCov, reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. The CDC believes that symptoms can appear in as few as 2 days or as long as 14 days after exposure.
How do I protect myself against Coroanvirus?
There are several ways to protect yourself according to the CDC. Several preventative actions you can take, include:
-
- Avoid close contact with individuals showing signs of illness
- Cover your nose and mouth with a mask when around others
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth without first washing your hands
