How to Extend the Life of your Carpet

We have posted many blogs on the relationship between regular professional carpet cleaning and your carpet’s durability.

But did you know that there are other contributing factors to extending the life of your carpet? And they’re easy!

It’s true that you will not be able to keep carpet over a lifetime, no matter how hard you try. However, if you want to ensure that it lasts as long as possible, you need to follow a few rules of thumb.

Let’s look at ways to extend the life of your carpet.

At Home

Floor Mats. Using floor mats on the inside and outside of every entryway is a great way of preventing dirt from ever reaching your carpet. Bigger is better! Just don’t forget to clean these too.

Vacuuming. Did you know that you should vacuum your carpets every day? Most people don’t, but it is the easiest way to keep out dirt and the 90-95 percent of dry soil that can accumulate in your carpets daily.

Stain Protector. Using carpet stain protector, like Scotchgard™, adds a layer of protection again dirt, water damage, mold, bacteria, and oil and water-based stains. Even if you bought your carpet with a stain protector included, it wears over time and should be applied after every professional cleaning.

Remove Spots Right Away. To reduce the likelihood of permanent stains, be sure to clean spots and spills right away. Make sure you blot, don’t scrub!

Rotate Your Furniture. A more creative solution to extend the life of your carpets is to create new traffic patterns by periodically rotating your furniture. This will cause people to alter their paths throughout the room and spread wear and tear more evenly.

At Your Facility

Be sure to follow all of the above tips (if possible) when taking care of your carpet at your facility, but be sure to include the following:

Regular Professional Cleaning. Professional standards recommend that you professionally clean your carpets with hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months. Not only will it make your carpets cleaner, healthier, and long-lasting; but it will also keep your carpet warranty from becoming void. Just make sure you read the fine print!

Interim Carpet Maintenance. Regular professional cleaning is not the only time you should clean your carpets. Interim carpet maintenance refers to the carpet cleaning that should be done between regularly scheduled cleaning.
