Woodard reached out to the Deputy Chief of a local fire protection district to introduce the Disinfection Services system and apply the system to two of their reserve units. Area of Concern: We reached out to the Deputy Chief of a local fire protection district to introduce the Disinfection Services system, and since he has a history in infection control at a medical center and is very familiar with the science behind Disinfection Services, he was very excited to have us come in and apply the system to two of their reserve units. We knew that this system would provide another layer of protection for their ambulances and would be a welcomed addition to their standard cleaning protocols. The Solution: The Deputy Chief asked us to swab 4 key touchpoints in the ambulances prior to spraying as well as a few minutes afterward, to test the effectiveness of the products, and we happily obliged. It took a mere 3 minutes for our trained applicator to apply the product to each ambulance, and then we shipped our swabs off to the lab for our first series of tests. The results came back very favorable, with significantly fewer bacteria counts just minutes after spraying than before Disinfection Services was applied. To ensure that Disinfection Services’s longevity held up as expected, we went back 15 days after the initial application to re-swab the same 4 touchpoints for further testing, as well as to swab a third ambulance that we had not sprayed with Disinfection Services. The goal of this swab was to show the bacteria counts in an ambulance that has been treated with their normal cleaning procedures. The Deputy Chief said that if an ambulance transport does not possess any serious infection or the presence of bodily fluids, his team can do a quick cleaning in about 5 minutes. If, however, they are dealing with a case that requires significantly more cleaning, it would take around 30 minutes to do so. Their standard cleaning product is bleach, and we know that while bleach can be an effective sanitizer, it is not an effective disinfectant. This means that bleach reduces, but doesn’t necessarily eliminate, microbes from hard surfaces to levels considered safe by public health codes or regulations. Summary: The test results from the 15-day post-spray swab were extremely positive. They showed very minimal, slow growth, which is very successful because we were unsure if the reserve ambulances would be put into rotation at all in that 15-day window, and they were, in fact, used during that time. So, not only did we see very slow, minimal growth, but this was after the ambulance had been used to transport individuals in need. We were very pleased with these results. Furthermore, the test results from the ambulance that was only cleaned through the district’s standard cleaning practices were also very encouraging. Their bacteria counts were significantly higher than our initial post-spray tests as well as our 15-day post-spray tests. This proves that Disinfection Services truly does kill bacteria more effectively than other cleaning agents, and, with a 3-minute application time per ambulance, its cost and time savings really can’t be beat. Though the fire district has good antibacterial protocols in place, Disinfection Services will provide the additional protection and sanitation needed to provide additional peace of mind.
