5 Uses for Lavender in Your Home

Nothing beats the sweetly soothing scent of lavender!

It is one of the top laundry scents after all! Surely you knew that, but, did you know that lavender lives a double-life? It’s true! That wonderful fresh scent you’ve come to love also has a powerful side that packs a mean punch when it comes to repelling fungi and bacteria, as well as repelling pests and improving air quality. Read on for five genius uses of lavender in your home.

#1: Laundry Detergent

Okay, so we know you know all about this one. But, if your favorite brand of detergent doesn’t come in a lavender scent, you can make your own laundry detergent, and add in that fresh scent of lavender. To add a hint of lavender to your load, simply add three teaspoons of lavender scented oil to your homemade detergent.

The best part? Well, aside from the intoxicating scent, making your own lavender scented laundry detergent is a great way to save some green! On average, the leading store-bought brand of laundry detergent costs the user approximately $0.12 per load – which seems perfectly affordable, right? Sure! But, if you take the DIY route, you’ll save triple time, as using homemade laundry detergent costs the user approximately $0.04 per load.

#2: Pest Repellant

Just like you, we love the aroma of lavender. However, moths and mosquitoes loathe it! To keep moths out of your business, fill small, breathable spice sacks with dried lavender sprigs, and hang them in your closet, or place them in your drawers. If mosquitoes are an issue, and let’s face it, they always are, dab a couple of drops of lavender scented oil on your skin before heading outside. No need to deal with the hassle of nasty bud spray when you have the fresh scent of lavender around!

#3: Wood Furniture Polish

Is your house home to small children or pets? If so, you’ll love this super safe and non-toxic furniture polish! The recipe is simple, and all-natural, so you don’t have to worry about bringing harsh chemicals into your home. All you’ll need is two tablespoons of lemon juice, ½ teaspoon of olive oil, and a drop of lavender oil – that’s it! Simply mix the ingredients together, and use it to buff your favorite piece of wood furniture; for best results, use a soft cloth. This is just one more way for you to sneak the scent of lavender into your home!

Remember: Before testing out this awesome lavender infused furniture polish, take the time to test it on a small and unnoticeable area of the furniture. Doing so will prevent a big “oops” in the end, and save you the hassle of an impromptu furniture shopping trip!

#4: All-Natural Air Freshener

Nothing is worse than the harsh scent of those flowery scented aerosol air fresheners – the sound alone is horrifying! To whip up an all-natural air freshening spritzer, all you’ll need is a few drops of lavender oil and one cup of water. Add both ingredients to a spray bottle, and use it all over your home to naturally freshen the air and diffuse odors. Not only is this a much more affordable option than those store-bought air fresheners, but it is safe, natural, and incredibly simple to make. In addition to using this mixture in the air, you can also spray it in empty vacuum bags before vacuuming your home to refresh your carpets and rugs.

#5: Linen Spray

If you think linen spray is an unnecessary part of the laundry process, think again. (It’s our fifth and final use of lavender in your home!) Not only does spritzing your bedding with linen spray instantly freshen up your sheets, but it also improves sleep and reduces dry skin. Due to its ability to repel fungi, bacteria, and hidden germs, lavender is a key ingredient found in most varieties of linen spray. While store-bought linen spray is highly effective, and often smells divine, it can be a bit costly, and sometimes contains harsh chemicals – making your own linen spray is your best bet!

Our homemade linen spray recipe requires only three ingredients, and can be made in under 60-seconds. Simply mix three ounces of vodka with 30 drops of lavender oil and 1 ½ cups of distilled water. Using a funnel, you’ll then pour the entire mixture into a spray bottle, give it a quick shake, and get your spray on! Tip: We know this stuff smells incredible, but don’t overdo it; a light spray across your sheets, pillows, and duvet is all it takes to create a soothing sleep space.
