Each year, on November 11th, we honor our Veterans for their bravery and sacrifice. Veterans Day was previously known as Armistice Day that honored the end of World War 1 which officially took place on November 11, 1918. It wasn’t until 1938 when a law was passed that “Armistice Day” became a new legal holiday to honor World War I veterans.
In 1954, after the US had been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by removing the word “Armistice” and changing it to “Veterans”. On June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor Veterans of all wars.
Many are often confused about the difference between Memorial Day (fourth Monday in May) and Veterans Day (November 11). Memorial Day honors the service men and women who passed away during service to their county or as a result of injuries from their time serving. Whereas Veterans Day is to thank and honor living veterans who served their county.
On Thursday, November 14th, Woodard hosted a Veterans Day breakfast to honor the brave service men and women who fought for their county. Woodard is proud to be a workplace that supports our active and reserved military men and women. In fact, Woodard was founded by World War II Veteran, Earl E. Woodard. He was shot down over Nazi-occupied France, the French Resistance helped him get back to his life. Without them, he would have ended up in a Nazi concentration camp. Woodard today is an extension of what the French people did for Earl Woodard.
Our focus — our purpose for existence — is to help people get back to their lives.
Thank you, again, to our Veterans!
