St. Louis Mandatory Stay at Home Orders

Mayor Lyda Krewson and County Executive Dr. Sam Page issued a stay at home order on Saturday, March 21st, 2020. The stay at home order is to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus in the area. By reducing the spread of the coronavirus (or flattening the curve) we can help relieve our healthcare system and allow for supplies (such as masks) to be restocked.

The orders apply to St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Other areas in the state (counties in Kansas City, MO) have been issued the same orders, but these guidelines only apply to St. Louis City and St. Louis County. At this time the stay at home orders do not apply statewide.

How long will the stay at home orders last?

The new restrictions will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, March 23rd, 2020 and continue in effect through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, April 22nd, 2020.

What is the purpose of the stay at home orders?

It’s highly important that all residents follow the stay at home orders to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community. If St. Louis does not follow these orders it will cause an influx in those who test positive for COVID-19 which will then overrun our healthcare system and hospitals. By helping slow the spread (flatten the curve) of the virus, we can alleviate the high demand that is currently being put on our hospitals, healthcare system, nurses, and doctors. By slowing the spread this will also allow for supplies, such as face masks, to be restocked to protect our nurses and doctors.

When can I leave my home during the stay at home orders?

You should only leave your home for essential activity such as:

• • Going to work
    • Businesses providing essential services or supplies are open and are considered an Essential Business
  • Purchasing necessary services or supplies needed to say home
    • food, cleaning supplies, pet food, medication, medical supplies, etc.
  • Going to the doctor or healthcare provider
  • Purchasing supplies necessary to maintain your household
  • Purchasing supplies necessary to work from home
  • Caring for others such as elderly, minors, dependents, or other family members outside of your household
  • Outdoor exercises such as walking, biking, or hiking while maintaining proper social distances
    • Although parks are still open, playgrounds should not be used at this time as they are likely to increase the spread of COVID-19

What happens if I don’t follow the stay at home orders?

According to the St. Louis Department of Public Health Department, “violating a public health order designed to prevent the entrance of infectious, contagious, communicable or dangerous diseases into St. Louis County is punishable as a misdemeanor.”
