How to Clean a Microwave

how to clean a microwave

As one of the most used appliances in the kitchen, microwaves are often neglected when it comes to cleaning.  Frequent spills, overflows and pungent food can leave your microwave holding in odors that are less than pleasant.  In some cases, even after cleaning this appliance the odors can linger.  Fortunately, there are plenty of do-it-yourself cleaning solutions and tricks that can help to remove any leftover food that has spilled in the microwave, while also addressing unpleasant smells that may be lingering.

Easy Ways to Clean Microwave

To clean your microwave, when no particularly stubborn food spills are evident, you can simply use dish soap. Remove the turntable and scrub this with a sponge and dish soap.  The inside of the microwave and the door can be cleaned using a concoction of dish soap and warm water with a sponge.  Wipe down the sides, top and bottom of the microwave with the soapy sponge.  You can then wipe the microwave down with a clean towel to remove the soap suds left behind.

How To Clean Microwave with Vinegar

Two of the most common items for fighting stuck-on food stains while also addressing smells in a microwave are baking soda and vinegar. Soak a clean sponge in vinegar and then sprinkle baking soda on top of it.  You can then place the sponge in the center of the microwave and turn the appliance on for 20-30 seconds.  This will loosen any stubborn food spills, making it easier to clean the microwave.  Scrub the interior of the microwave, using this same vinegar-soaked sponge.  Then rinse with water.

The age-old technique of leaving a box of baking soda in a refrigerator to remove odors can also work in the microwave.  Place an open box of baking soda in the microwave, or pour some into a bowl, letting it sit overnight to absorb the odors.

How to Clean Microwave with Lemon

Another common item used to clean microwaves are lemons and lemon juice! Lemon juice not only removes smells, but it also has anti-bacterial properties.  Squeeze the juice from one lemon, combining it with ½ cup of water.  Place the water and juice, along with the rinds, in a bowl in the microwave, leaving it overnight.  This same process can be done with oranges, too!

Regularly giving your microwave a thorough cleaning will make sure that this appliance is running well and that no nasty odors are permeating onto your food.
