Granite vs Marble Countertops: Which Option is Right for You

Granite vs Marble

Both granite and marble countertops can be aesthetically pleasing for a kitchen countertop or a bathroom vanity. Available in an endless array of colors and patterns, granite and marble are sure to offer any homeowner that unique look. Granite is a popular choice for its durability and reasonable price. This option can be found in a lot of homes today. Marble, which is a much pricier stone made up of calcium carbonate, often signifies luxury giving a contemporary and sleek look in the home. Let’s dig in deeper to granite vs marble countertops and find which option is right for you!

Granite Countertops

Durable and Affordable

Countertops that are made with granite are often very unique in their design, with no two countertops looking the same. With a wide range of colors and patterns, granite often shows large veins running through the stone that can be aesthetically pleasing and chosen to complement a kitchen or bath.

One of granite’s advantages is its durability and resistance to cracks and chips. Because granite is very dense, it is resistant to staining and very durable against regular wear and tear. In most cases, you can cut directly on a granite countertop without causing damage and hot pots and pans left on the granite do not leave any damage or burn marks. Granite is also very easy to take care of, simply wiping down the countertops with a dry cloth or with water. These types of countertops will need to be resealed as needed, which is a relatively simple process but does require some vigilance to know when it is needed.

Marble Countertops

Sleek and Uniform

Where granite has unique patterns that vary from stone to stone, marble differs in that is most often uniform throughout with a consistency that granite does not offer. Marble is a more porous stone than granite, making it more susceptible to damage. Acidic liquid such as lemon juice and vinegar can damage the stone. Like granite, marble countertops need to be sealed regularly.

Marble countertops do offer a sleek, modern look that is less common in homes today. Some homeowners prefer the luxury and contemporary look that marble can offer, elevating the appearance of their kitchen or bath.

One big difference between granite and marble countertops is the price tag. Marble countertops are often more than double the price of their granite counterparts.

Granite and marble countertops each have their own advantages and disadvantages. The look of your home, anticipated investment, and overall care of the stone is what should be considered when making your final decision.

Granite and Marble Cleaning

After you’ve determined what type of counter you want to install (or maybe determined what type of counter you currently have), call the professionals at Woodard for a professional clean. It’s important that you use the proper products on your hard surfaces. Some solutions, like vinegar, can cause damage to natural stones ruining them!
