5 DIY Tips to Protect Home from Theft

These easy to follow tips will help secure from your home from theft.

Tip #1 – Improve Your Landscaping

Adding shrubbery to your home is a great way to deter burglars from breaking into your home. Thorny bushes or plants placed underneath your windows works great to avoid anyone trying to break into your home through your windows. Placing both solar powered and motion-sensored lights will help to keep your home lit in the evening and nighttime hours.

Tip #2 – Keep Your Travel Plans Private

When you’re traveling and plan to be away from your home for an extended period of time, only tell the people you trust. Don’t share your travel plans on social media or with untrustworthy friends. While you’re away, but sureto make it look like you’re still home. You can have a timer set to a lamp or TV to automatically turn on and off in the evening. Also, don’t forget to have a friend pick up your mail or have the post office hold it – thieves look for mail and newspapers to stack up!

Tip #3 – Remove Visible Phone Lines

A majority of homes today have a home alarm system that can detect motion and unlocked doors or windows. When the alarm goes off, traditionally, an alert is sent out over your telephone lines. Burglars can easily cut the phone lines to stop the alert from being transmitted to the alarm company. If you have an alarm system, make sure your phone lines are hidden or set up a cellular signal to transmit the alert.

Tip #4 – Properly Secure Sliding Doors

You can secure your sliding door by taking a metal rod or a long piece of wood and placing it into the track of the door. If a theft is able to unlock the door, they won’t be able to open it since there’s an object in the way of the door.

Tip #5 – Use Deadbolts to Secure Doors and Windows

Using a deadbolt on your doors and windows often discourages a thief because deadbolts make their job much more difficult! Deadbolts provide more security to your home than your standard doorknobs.
